CHAMPS EMBRACE LIFE “JUST THE WAY I AM” AT CHILD AMPUTEE SEMINAR IN BURLINGTON

April 22, 2019 – The War Amps 2019 Ontario Child Amputee (CHAMP) Seminar starts this Friday in Burlington. The Seminar will bring together young amputees and their parents from across the province, where they will learn about the latest developments in artificial limbs, dealing with teasing and staring and parenting an amputee child. The theme of the Seminar, “Just the Way I Am,” encourages Champs to embrace their amputation and overcome hurdles on the road to independence.

Media are welcome to attend the following sessions. Interviews with local Champs and War Amps representatives can be arranged at any time.

Friday, April 26
6:45 p.m. Welcoming (Halton B, C & D)
The War Amps introduces the 2019 seminar theme, “Just the Way I Am,” with a special opening to kick off the weekend.
Saturday, April 27
9:10 a.m. PLAYSAFE! (Halton A)
Champs will view the new War Amps safety video, PLAYSAFE: Don’t Let It Happen to You and learn how they can become Safety Ambassadors and teach other children how to PLAYSAFE.
10:25 a.m. Owning Your Amputation for:
Arm Amputees (Harvester North)
Leg Amputees (Halton B, C & D)
Partial Hand Amputees (Harvester South)
Multiple Amputees (Halton A)

Champs will learn special hacks to help “take charge” of their amputation. They will also participate in lively demonstrations of their recreational limbs and special devices.
1:10 p.m. Feature Presentation (Halton B, C & D)
CHAMP Graduates David Connolly and Taylor Long, both of Toronto, are double foot amputees. In a “Q&A” format, they will tell Champs how they’ve pursued careers in the performing arts and led successful and rewarding lives by being “Just the Way I Am.” Their positive message will inspire Champs to face challenges as amputees and live life to the fullest.
1:30 p.m. What Bugs Me (Halton B, C & D)
Teasing, staring and answering questions about being an amputee – Champs have the floor to talk about what bugs them, with older Champs providing tips and advice.
Sunday, April 28
8:45 a.m. You Can Be a CHAMP Ambassador (Halton Hall)
Champs receive certificates in recognition of their involvement with The War Amps and for spreading important messages in their community as “CHAMP Ambassadors.”
9:30 a.m. Seminar Closing (Halton Hall)
Our closing looks back on the seminar weekend and leaves Champs confident for the coming year by being “Just the Way I Am.”
