BC Lions Team up With War Amps “Champ” to Pass on Safety Message

July 21, 2017 – Having lost part of his left foot in a lawn mower accident, seven-year-old Darevin Curnow, of Chemainus, is eager to share his story and alert other kids across Canada about the importance of playing safely.

Darevin, who has been named The War Amps 2017 National Safety Ambassador, joined BC Lions players Travis Lulay and Jeremiah Johnson yesterday at the team’s practice facility in Surrey, to film this year’s War Amps PLAYSAFE public service announcement.

Darevin was enrolled in The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program after his accident and is now using his experience to pass on an essential and possibly life-saving lesson to other children --PLAYSAFE! “Darevin and the players had a lot of fun filming the PSA, while also spreading a powerful message that will reach thousands of people across the country,” said Rob Larman, War Amps PLAYSAFE/DRIVESAFE director. “The BC Lions and the Canadian Football League have been tremendously supportive in making this event possible,” he added.

"The BC Lions are excited to be the team to partner with The War Amps this year in an effort to drive home a very important message to PLAYSAFE. The Lions are always seeking ways to continue to give back to the community, and to be able to continue the long-standing tradition between The War Amps and the CFL is a terrific extension of this objective", said Terri Breker, Director of Marketing for the BC Lions. "Darevin is a great Ambassador for the CHAMP Program, and an inspirational young Lions fan. It has been a thrill to be able to introduce him to our players, particularly his ‘co-stars’ Travis Lulay and Jeremiah Johnson, all while delivering an important safety message to the youth of our communities."

For more than 35 years, The War Amps and the Canadian Football League have shared a special tradition - the annual PLAYSAFE PSA, saluting the League's support of The War Amps kids-to-kids safety program. Like all War Amps productions, the PSA is funded by corporate donations. It will be broadcasted during TSN’s football telecasts starting Thanksgiving weekend, including the CFL Playoffs, the Grey Cup, and on other networks and specialty channels.
