Headshot of George Pauls

1925-2014

George Pauls

George H. Pauls was born on January 12, 1925, in Winkler, Manitoba. At the age of 18, he left work as a farm labourer and enlisted with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada. On October 6, 1944, while his regiment was under attack in Belgium, he was wounded by shrapnel, which became an infection that resulted in the amputation of his left hand.

When he returned to Canada, Mr. Pauls joined The War Amps Manitoba Branch, serving a term as President and contributing many volunteer hours. Later in life, he received his high school diploma and enjoyed a career as a Manager in the restaurant industry.

Mr. Pauls never let his amputation hold him back and kept active by golfing, cross-country skiing and curling. He embraced The War Amps motto, “It’s what’s left that counts” and was presented with the Curler of Distinction Award by Curl Manitoba in 2010.

As a strong supporter of the CHAMP Program, he attended many CHAMP seminars and helped with the PLAYSAFE float entries in local parades. During such events, he served as a positive role model for child amputees. Mr. Pauls received the Honorary CHAMP Membership for his many contributions to the Association.

He passed away on January 4, 2014.
