Gavin Hickey

Gavin Hickey was born on March 17, 1925, in Durham Centre, New Brunswick, and enlisted with the North Shore Regiment in 1940. He was stationed overseas in July 1941 and took part in the D-Day landing at Normandy, France. In July 1944, he was injured in Carpiquet, France, and lost his left leg below the knee and left hand. Mr. Hickey was treated for his injuries in England and returned to Canada in the fall of that year.

A proud member of The War Amps, he held the positions of:

  • Secretary, Vice-President and President, New Brunswick Branch
  • National Director, New Brunswick Branch
  • Chairman, War Amps National Convention in Saint John (1963)
  • Member, War Amps National Council (1983-1994)

  • Meritorious Service Membership, The War Amps
  • Honorary CHAMP Membership
  • Canada 125 Medal

In recognition of his advocacy work on behalf of amputees and for his devoted service to the Association, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Membership, Meritorious Service Membership and Honorary CHAMP Membership from The War Amps. He also received the Canada 125 Medal.

Mr. Hickey passed away on October 12, 1994.
